Which Native American Tribe Resided around Halifax and Palmyra NC in the Early 1800’s?
Over the year I have been told that my great great great grandmother was an American Indian who had married a previous slave. I traced her name which was morning who was born in 1825 somewhere in North Carolina and lived in the Palmyra /Halifax areas in North Carolina. Trying to find out if there were any American Indian tribes living in that area. she was born abt 1825 and I know she lived in these areas around 1845. I can’t find her maiden name only her married name.
The Cherokee Tribe is and was the prominent tribe in North Carolina. But there were literally 10’000’s of them at that time.
Sorry… in rereading my answer I misspoke…
The prominent tribe in the area of Halifax/Palmyra was the Cherokee Tribe. When I said there were 10,000 of them, I meant 10,000 Cherokees… not 10,000 tribes…
