In 1709, Derbanne formed a union at Mobile, in the Louisiana colony, with Jeanne de la Grande Terre, a Christianized Indian of the Chitimachs tribe who had been taken in slavery in a French retaliatory attack on her village in 1707 (Old Mobile: Fort Louis de la Louisiane, 1702-1711 by Jay Higginbotham)

The Chitimachs Tribe as referenced in the above citation is actually the Chitimacha tribe which resided on Grand River, Grand Lake, and the lower course of Bayou La Teche in Louisiana. The Chitimacha came into notice soon after the French settled Louisiana, through the murder by one of their men of the missionary, St. Cosme, on the Mississippi in 1706. This was followed by a protracted war with the French, who compelled them to sue for peace, which was granted by Bienville on condition that the head of the murderer be brought to him; this done, peace was concluded. The tribe then must have been reduced to a small number of warriors, though Le Page du Pratz, who was present at the final ceremony, says they arrived at the meeting place in many pirogues.

The Chitimacha were the most powerful tribe of the northern Gulf coast west of Florida in United States territory. They also attained prominence in early Louisiana history on account of their long war with the French and the number of Chitimacha slaves in colonial families arising from that fact. The survivors are noteworthy as the best basket makers in the whole Gulf region.
